Monday, March 9  Fall Flowers: Annuals and Perennials that Bloom in Autumn  Presentation by Master Gardener and naturalist Coletta Cosiba. Your fall garden will be as glorious as the spring and summer garden with these plants that are hardy in dry and hot conditions. Thursday, March 12  Vegetable Gardening: Growing Tasty Food in Your Garden  Presentation by Master Gardener and naturalist Coletta Cosiba. Producing food for your table has numerous benefits--lots of vitamins, it’s fresh, tastes so wonderful, you have to eat it to believe the difference from supermarket food. Thursday, March 26  Green Site Planning Workshop Intended for planners, landscape architects, developers, engineers, local government plan reviewers, and water quality specialists, but anyone interested in innovative ways to use native vegetation with storm water management is invited. Presenters David Dods and Kari Mackenbach from the nationally known URS Company will teach about sizing and designing Best Management Practices (BMPs) for water quality & volume control, site selection & evaluation, and rain garden sizing. Fee $30.00; includes program, refreshments, box lunch, and tour of Earth Discovery Center water management. Thursday, April 2  IMA Horticultural Society Lecture Tried and True! Proven Perennials from the Chicago Botanic Garden Trials  Field observation, years of experience, and a passion for plants—all blend together in the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Plant Evaluation Program. Dedicated to the scientific study of perennials, annuals, vines, shrubs, and trees, the program evaluates plants for qualities that make them superior for gardens in the Upper Midwest, rating them on ornamental value, cultural adaptability, winter hardiness, and disease and pest resistance. Presenter Richard Hawke, CBG’s Plant Evaluation Manager, recently received the Perennial Plant Association’s Academic Award for teaching excellence. 7:30 p.m., Tobias Theater, IMA. April 11 - 6th Annual White River RC&D Wildflower Hike, Co-sponsored by the Sycamore Land Trust.

Morning hike in Spring Mill State Park to a small barrens that has some unusual plants. Buffet lunch at the Inn with a speaker from the Park. Afternoon hike to Cave River Valley, a private property acquired by the Nature Conservancy that will be transferred to Spring Mill State Park. Hikes held rain or shine; led by Kay Yatskievych and Carroll Ritter.

Registration is required and is limited to 40 people. Registration fee is $5 plus lunch ($10.62 adult, $8.50 senior, $5.37 child 5-10; all taxes included). Registration fee is waived for students and Spring Mill State Park Gate fee will be waived for the event.

Southern Ohio Wildflower Pilgrimage

The Arc of Appalachia Preserve System

Three days of over thirty field trips to southern Ohio’s spectacular wildflower showcases. Led by some of our area’s best botanists and naturalists. Each field trip is limited to 15 participants. The Arc of Appalachia region has some of the most beautiful wildflower displays in the U.S. Eastern Temperate Forest. You are encouraged to register as quickly as possible. Area lodging and complete meals available.

This year’s keynote speaker is Kentucky’s superlative Photographer, Tom Barnes, author of Kentucky's Last Great Places, Wildflowers and Ferns of Kentucky, and the  just-released Rare Wildflowers of Kentucky. 

Sponsored by the Arc of Appalachia Preserve System with the cooperation and assistance of The Nature Conservancy Ohio Chapter, Cincinnati Museum Center, Cincinnati Nature Center, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Ohio Division of Natural Areas and Preserves,  Ross County Park District, Shawnee State Park & State Forest, Southern State Community College, and the Ohio Historical Society.

April 24-25 - Midwest-Great Lakes SER (Society for Ecological Restoration) Chapter’s First Annual Meeting, Marian College, Indianapolis, IN

May 1-3 - Flora-Quest, Shawnee State Park and Edge of Appalachia Preserve, Ohio

Established in 2007, Flora-Quest is a hand’s-on learning adventure focusing on wild plants. In addition to learning about common plants, Flora-Quest participants will also have the opportunity to observe a number of great rarities. Particularly noteworthy are the Appalachian plants found no further north than Shawnee. Newcomers are often amazed to see southerners like umbrella magnolia, pinxter-flower azaleas, and early stoneroot in the forest. Some of Ohio’s most gifted botanists and naturalists lead Flora-Quest expeditions.
